The excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is regulated by Nedd4-2 and SGK. EAAT2 is the major transporter which moves glutamate back into the cell following neurotransmission. Defects in the transporters have been found to associate with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.360 In Xenopus oocyte expression system it was shown that glutamate-induced inward current is stimulated by SGK but virtually abolished Nedd4-2. Similarly, glutamate uptake and cell surface abundance of EAAT2 are increased by SGK but downregulated by Nedd4-2.
